Search Chester County Prison Inmates

Chester County Prison is the main local detention facility for Chester County, Pennsylvania, and it holds people booked after arrest, people waiting for court, and people serving local sentences. A Chester County Prison inmate lookup is different from a state prison search because the county did not publish a public online jail roster in the official materials reviewed. To look up inmates at Chester County Prison, start with the county prison contact channels, then use court, state, federal, immigration, notification, and records-request tools when the custody question reaches beyond the local jail.

Chester County Prison Overview

Chester County Prison is a county jail-type facility operated through Chester County Prison administration and the Chester County Prison Board structure. It is not described by the county as a sheriff-run jail division. The official prison page places the facility at 501 South Wawaset Road in West Chester and lists separate public phone lines for the prison and the Correctional Center. That distinction matters because the prison handles the main custody population, while the same campus also includes the Work Release / Community Corrections Center.

The facility holds both males and females, including pretrial detainees and sentenced offenders. The 2022 PREA audit describes custody levels as minimum, medium, and maximum. It also reports that youthful inmates may be present and, when they are, the facility uses separate housing with sight-and-sound separation from adults. The prison is therefore the first local point for a person recently committed after a Chester County arrest, but a sentenced state prisoner should be checked through the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections locator instead.

The official Chester County Prison page shows the local facility contact block and related prison links.

The county page is useful for phone routing, facility notices, the prison address, and the distinction between the prison and correctional-center numbers.

Chester County Prison Population

The strongest official Chester County Prison population figures in the research come from the 2022 PREA audit. That audit lists a designated facility capacity of 1,105. It gives a current population of 629, an average daily population of 618 for the prior 12 months, 3,534 admissions in that period, and an average length of stay or supervision of 296 days. The same audit states that the facility was not over capacity at any point in the prior 12 months.

These figures should not be read as a live Chester County Prison roster. They are audit figures, not a daily head count. For current custody, use the prison phone line, VINE, court dockets, and the records-request process described below.

Chester County Prison Inmate Lookup

No official public Chester County jail roster or searchable public inmate profile was located on the county site during the research pass. That means a Chester County Prison inmate lookup starts with direct custody channels rather than a public web roster. Call the prison at 610-344-5040 for custody, bail, and facility routing questions. Use 610-344-4222 when the question concerns the Correctional Center, Work Release / Pre-Release residents, or resident visiting-list status.

  1. Start with the correct custody level. A new Chester County arrest points first to Chester County Prison, not to the state prison locator.
  2. Call 610-344-5040 with the person's full legal name. Other identifiers may help, but the county did not publish a phone-search script.
  3. Search Pennsylvania UJS Case Search for court charges, docket entries, bail changes, and criminal case events.
  4. Use Pennsylvania VINE/VINELink for custody-status notifications, while treating it as a supplement rather than a complete roster.
  5. Use the PADOC locator only when the person has moved into state custody or parole supervision.
  6. For records not available through normal channels, file a Chester County Right-to-Know request through the county process.

Note: A county jail custody question and a criminal court docket question may need two separate searches.

Chester County Prison Contact

The prison publishes separate phone numbers for the main prison and the Correctional Center. Current inmate status, bail routing, and facility questions should start with the prison number. Questions tied to Work Release / Pre-Release residents or the resident visiting list should use the Correctional Center number.

Chester County Prison Visits

New arrivals at Chester County Prison are not eligible for visits until classification is complete, and the official inmate information material says classification usually takes 48 to 72 hours. Standard social visits are 30 minutes. A visit consists of three authorized visitors entering the visiting area at the same time, and each inmate is limited to ten names on the visiting list. The counselor completes that list, and changes require a 30-day waiting period after the list is completed.

Visitors age 18 or older need full photo identification or photo ID with supporting documentation. Visitors ages 12 through 18 need photo ID showing name. Former inmates are barred from visitation for at least one calendar year after release and must apply for approval before visiting. Pets are not permitted on prison property, and exceptions require warden approval.

The official visitation source did not provide a full day-by-day table for every housing unit in the research material, so the safest step is to call Chester County Prison before a trip.

Chester County Prison Mail

Chester County Prison uses different addresses for general non-legal mail and legal mail or approved publications. General correspondence must include the inmate's full first and last name plus permanent ID number. The county mail page also states that mail lacking the required name and permanent ID number can be rejected, and it bars nudity in photographs regardless of the subject's age.

The official Chester County inmate mail page shows the Phoenix mail address, the Wawaset Road legal-mail address, and publication limits.

Chester County Prison inmate mail rules and addresses

Those address rules are important because legal mail and approved publications do not use the same destination as general correspondence.

Chester County Prison Intake

Intake is a custody process, not a public counter with published booking hours. The 2022 PREA audit says people receive information at intake about the facility's zero-tolerance policy for sexual abuse and harassment and how to report incidents. It also says medical intake screening occurs on arrival, and PREA-related assessment and classification occur within 72 hours. That timing lines up with the official visitor rule that new arrivals are not eligible for visits until classification is finished.

Classification
The jail's review of custody level, housing needs, safety issues, and eligibility for visits or programs.
Pretrial detainee
A person held before case resolution, often because bail, release conditions, or other court orders have not allowed release.
Detainer
A hold or notice from another authority that may affect release even when a Chester County bail issue is resolved.

Chester County Prison History

Chester County's official prison history says a new prison was planned in the 1950s to replace the older county jail. In February 1956, architects recommended 142 individual cells, divided into 72 minimum security cells, 48 medium security cells, 10 maximum security cells, and 12 female cells. The current prison opened in 1959, was renovated and expanded in 1983, and added the Work Release Center on prison property in 1993.

The official Chester County Prison history page records the original capacity plan and later facility-development timeline.

Chester County Prison history and custody facility timeline

That history explains why the modern Chester County Prison page must account for both the main jail and the on-campus Work Release / Community Corrections component.
